Roses in the yard. There are many more, but Klaus hasn't photographed all of them yet.
Koko Loco
Koko Loco is a beautiful brown rose, with a strong scent. It seems like a lavender rose, with yellow on top. Great bloomer after 2 years, sometimes covered with 20+ beautiful flowers.
I really like this one.

The muted color photographs very well! The most satisfying rose for photography.
Koko loco seems to hold a reasonable shape and color as it ages. The newest flowers are the most beautiful, but people love the color of this rose even as it fades.
Polynesian Punch
Beautiful colors! Not heavily scented, but the colors are gorgeous.
But the blooms open up quickly. This is what you get most of the time. Very beautiful, but the individual flowers are small. I think of this as a great landscape rose with absolutely gorgeous flowers.
Graham Thomas
Large David Austen rose. Beautiful scent. Probably my favorite Austin in the yard- noteworthy for the size of the plant (6 feet plus) and the nice shade of yellow that looks great as a cut flower. I put mine in a green glass vase, and I love having it in the house.
Recommend if you need a large rose.

Neil Diamond
Red and white stripes, with a very strong perfume scent. Unfortunately I am not really a fan of this type of rose, or the strong perfume scent. Flowers grow individually at the end of long upright canes. This rose performs well, I just don't like the performance.
Violet's Pride
I accidentally planted two of this rose. That's not too bad, because it is a really nice rose.
Brandy
Sometimes this is my favorite rose. The scent is wonderful- not perfumey at all, more of a rich spice. The colors are so warm- and great thick petals. If a rose could be masculine, this is it. This rose reminds me of brandy on ice. It will make your whole body warm. The only negative is that it's a bit stingy with the flowers, but that's part of the charm. But it's my favorite rose when it has flowers.
Brandy- you're a fine girl.

Golden Celebration
Beautiful flowers, wonderful citrus scent. But in our hot climate this plant puts out very long canes that sag and droop- so those beautiful flowers are looking down at the ground.
I'm considering removing this. Great rose other than the drooping, but that absolutely kills this David Austen English rose for me. Maybe it would be better if I lived in England.
Fun fact
In 2019, Golden Celebration was the first rose where I saw a bud. It was tiny, but I saw a flower bud on March 16, 2019.

Tranquility
Another David Austin, and this also puts out flowers on long canes that sag. But, they don't sag as much as Golden Celebration, so it's okay. I'd like it to be more compact, but...I really shouldn't complain! This is a great cut rose that holds its petals for a long time. I'd call the scent 'medium'.
I like it. One of the better white roses I've had.

Vavoom
Wow. This really, really draws your attention with super bright orange petals. The tips usually fade to a lighter color, which makes it seem like it glows.
I like the scent, but it's much milder than the advertising would lead you to believe.
Pretty solid rose, and I love the color.

Confetti
A rose with small flowers. Lots of nice color variations.
Little scent.
I was actually planning on removing this rose, but someone visiting the garden specifically pointed to it and said, "Wow, this one is my favorite!" So if someone out there loves it, I should keep it.

WOW- this rose just absolutely took off! For the last three weeks (mid-October to early November) this rose just absolutely took off! Three times I went out to count the nice blooms, and all three times the count was over 15 on this plant. That's just a lot of flowers!
It's hard to photograph though- I don't like the color contrast with the green. Still working on it.

Peachy Keen
I have this rose along the street, where you would see it from a distance, but not get up close. I think it is great for that. The flowers themselves aren't wonderful, and the color fades quickly. But the petals drop fairly clean, and this rose needs very little care.
In the location it's in, this is great. Not what I would like in my garden.

Lady Banks (Yellow)
When Lady Banks is blooming, everyone wants one! It's a giant plant, covered in small yellow flowers. For about 3-4 weeks, this is a star. But, for the other 49 weeks of the year, it is just a leggy green vine.
It's thornless (plus) but has no scent at all, and for most of the year, no flowers. I don't recommend this plant.

Lady Banks (white)
The white Lady Banks is a bit different than the yellow- other than just the color. The white plant blooms for a much longer period- though it is never as showy. And, the plant stays a lot smaller than the yellow.
Still no scent, and still thornless- I prefer the white version of this rose because you really do get blooms all year long.

Heathcliff
Heathcliff has a disease! The leaf up above demonstrates Apple Mosaic Virus.
Belinda's Dream
Someone once told me that this rose reminds them of their grandmother's cold cream. I'd pretty much agree with that. If you ever put your hands in your grandmothers cream, that's what this rose looks like.
One of the big rose catalogs says, "You owe it to your gardening forebearers to take a look at this charming rose." So- this is your grandmother's rose. Not that there is anything wrong with that. |
